Sacramento was one of the major cities during the Gold Rush where many Chinese immigrants came to pursue a better opportunity. It was one of the largest Chinatowns at one point! Many became business owners in grocery laundromats, restaurants, and entrepreneurs in the area. It was a thriving community of art and culture with a theater, social halls, and more. During the Chinese Exclusion Act, Sacramento Chinatown experienced large fires, violence, and targeted legislation passed within the city to drive out Chinese immigrants. Today, the remnants of this bustling town show in the architecture and the last remaining buildings on I-J Street.
